The model is fundamentally different from ImageSharp: instead of “load a photo and mutate it,” you draw — which is exactly what you want for generated badges, avatars with initials, social share cards, chart images, or watermarks that must sit at a precise angle. Because Skia is native, your deployment needs the right runtime binaries per platform; the NuGet packages carry them, but container images must not be trimmed of the native assets.

Licensing Traps, Memory Limits, and Migration Pitfalls

  • The Six Labors Split License is the trap to read twice. ImageSharp is Apache-2.0-licensed only if you are an open-source project, a non-profit/registered charity, a for-profit under $1M USD annual gross revenue, or consuming it as a transitive dependency. Cross $1M and a direct dependency requires a commercial license from Six Labors. Your “free” library can become a line item — budget for it, or standardize on SkiaSharp/Magick.NET if you expect to cross the threshold.   • Native dependency shipping. ImageSharp is the only one of the three with zero native assets.
