Twig, born in the Symfony project in 2009, is the template engine that the rest of the PHP world measures itself against. That a_variable with the <script> payload is the whole point: with autoescape: 'html', Twig prints it as escaped text. You must explicitly opt out with the raw filter — the safe direction. Where Twig and Blade escape everything as if it were HTML text, Latte inspects where a variable is printed and escapes for that exact context: HTML body, HTML attribute, URL, or JavaScript string. Print $url inside href="..." and Latte applies URL escaping; print it inside onclick="..." and it applies JavaScript escaping. You get the right escaping without choosing a filter — the compiler picks it for you.

Latte also offers the strongest guarantees for template reuse: its {sandbox} tag can sandbox any included template, and the Nette ecosystem provides a translator, form rendering, and 3D-party integrations. Blade’s real killer features are components and slots — anonymous components defined as single Blade files, <x-layout> tags with attributes, and @props — which have effectively replaced partials and layouts in modern Laravel applications. Add @php blocks, @auth / @guest directives, and @can authorization directives, and you have a template engine that covers the entire server-rendered application lifecycle.

The trade-off: Blade is only available inside Laravel, its “sandbox” is nonexistent (templates are plain PHP and can call anything), and because output is compiled to raw PHP, a {{ }} vs {!! !!} mistake is the easiest XSS footgun of the four.

Common Pitfalls and Migration Gotchas

1. Escaping is not the same in all four engines — and neither are the escape hatches. Twig’s |raw, Latte’s {!$var!}, Smarty’s nofilter, and Blade’s {!! !!} all emit unescaped output, but the defaults differ. Latte is the only one that escapes per-context automatically. When migrating templates between engines, treat every raw-output site as a security review point — do not mechanically port the syntax.

2. Whitespace control fights your markup. Twig uses {%- -%} to trim whitespace, Blade uses @ directives and -- markers, Smarty has {strip}, and Latte trims trailing whitespace on tags by default. Ported templates frequently produce unwanted blank lines and broken <pre> blocks. Render each page after migration and diff the HTML, not just the visible output.

3. Undefined-variable behavior differs wildly. 5. Compile-cache invalidation. All four engines cache compiled templates, and in production with opcache.validate_timestamps=0 (a common performance optimization), a changed .twig/.tpl/.latte file may not invalidate the cache. Deployment pipelines must clear the cache directory — or the team spends an afternoon debugging “my change isn’t live.”

6. The raw/nofilter/{!! !!} habit is contagious. Every code review of a template codebase should start by grepping for raw-output constructs. In a large legacy Smarty codebase you will often find {$var nofilter} on data that was never sanitized upstream — that is your real migration risk, not the syntax.

7. PHP 8.4/8.5 compatibility. Smarty v5 and Twig 3.x support the newest PHP releases; older Smarty 3.x and Twig 1.x do not. Before upgrading PHP on a legacy server, check the engine version — this is the most common reason template engines block an otherwise simple PHP upgrade.
