highlight.js: The Zero-Config Veteran

That is the entire setup. highlightAll scans the page for <pre><code> blocks, sniffs the language from the content, and styles them with your chosen theme (there are 100+ themes in the repo, including github-dark, atom-one-dark, and vs2015). In Node.js the same API works server-side: hljs.highlight(code, { language: 'javascript' }) returns an HTML string you can embed.

The honest trade-offs: auto-detection occasionally guesses wrong on tiny snippets, and the “just works” full bundle is heavy — roughly 1 MB when every language is included. The API is deliberately async — grammars and themes are lazy-loaded and cached — which means Shiki is designed for build-time or server-side rendering, not for dropping into a plain HTML page. That is a feature, not a bug: your visitors never download the highlighter at all; they receive finished HTML.
